Nose bridge augmentation using silicone implant may be a reasonable procedure as a primary augmentation

Silicone implant is an option for those who wish to increase the height of their nose bridge in oppose to their own tissue namely, cartilage. Nose bridge augmentation using silicone implant is possible when the skin coverage is thick and healthy. The major benefits of this foreign material are; no donor site defect, unlimited amount of material needed, low cost and low maintenance. Most if not all of poor results of silicone augmentations are from lack of understanding of patients' esthetic, overuse of what the implant can offer and improper technique. Another common material used for augmentation is Gore-Tex or ePTFE. Sometimes a small piece of cartilage can be taken from the patients' ear to use in conjunction with the implant to get the desired result especially in the tip of the nose. This does not mean a give up but it means respect, what can be done and what can not be done within the patients' anatomy.

The procedure is done under local anesthesia and involves creating a pocket inside the nose to accommodate the implant. The depth of the implant under the skin depends on the skin thickness and the desire to shape the nose. The incision is deep inside the nostril in order to hide the scar and to prevent nostril rim distortion. The surgery takes 15-30 minutes. Swelling is minimal and patients usually do not need to take a day off work. Stitches inside the nose dissolve. A follow-up scheduling is necessary to ensure that the procedure yields a safe and optimum result.
